midnight musings ...
Current mood: angsty
been having a hard time getting to sleep lately ...
among other reasons --- been reading way too many eerie stories full of silent angst, silvery ghosts, grandiose dreams, irreversible failure, & tales of unrequited love - no complaints, not really - i love reading too much to stop feeding my mind this darkly romantic prose ... i just hate that most of the books i've been reading have been killing off the characters i like ... let's take alice hoffman as an example (as a writer-sample, i mean, not a character) - she will make all this effort to perfectly round out a character - the entire novel would be so beautifully rendered that this character is someone who could very well be sitting next to you being your new best friend (or in some cases, becomes your litero-crush on this hot-ass piece of fiction) - and then, quite inevitably, she will kill this person off right at the height of your passion for them ...
i guess that's the point right? the story stays with me because this person is killed, maimed, or emotionally destroyed --- & i am left crying but applauding wildly for the pure talent that has wrenched this emotion out of me ... i am applauding mentally, of course, as per usual, i am reading a book during the earliest moments of the morning while everyone else in the house is swimming sweetly through their dream states ...
anyway ... the book i'm in the midst of isn't supposed to be depressing so ... we shall see ... maybe i'll get some sleep tonight ... :) ...
actually, i take that back ... my book-loving persona would much rather close my eyes at 4am tomorrow morning - coming off yet another sleepless night with another good book tucked into the folds of my memory ...
summer reads:
when the rainbow goddess wept cecilia manguerra brainard C+ {yeah ... wish this one had been a little better - i mean, it's filipino lit, right? so i really wanted to like it ... but i just didn't ... i skipped around a lot on it ... didn't really catch my attention - bummer :( ... }
three filipino women f. sionil jose A+ {if you're interested at all in filipino literature at all, DEFINITELY pick this one up ... it's artfully done - i can see why many of his asian contemporaries hail mr. sionil jose as one of the asian writers likely to earn the nobel prize for literature ... it's awesome! there are 3 novellas in this book & each female protagonist in the story symbolizes the Philippines as a country during different eras of enslavement, revolution, & corruption ... yeah ... it's that f***ing deep - it made me want to write a love letter full of adulation & amazement to the author ... the last story is especially heart-breaking ... reminded me a little bit of the melodrama found rampant in filipino movie-making ... but of course, that is what filipinos love to do ... get all dramatic, i mean ... }
mermaids in the basement michael lee west C+ {ugh ... actually, i'm being generous ... i didn't enjoy this one ... at all ... bummer ... i hate when a book doesn't come through for me :( ... it's a betrayal of sorts, especially since i liked her last novel - crazy ladies - or something like that - i've forgotten the title ... well - i guess this one suffered from the sophomore curse or something - didn't know there was such thing in literature! }
the third angel alice hoffman A {awesome book --- there's a little bit of an unconventional ghost story in this one - pretty awesome! i would definitely recommend this one! it actually made me want to cry!}
blackbird house alice hoffman A {as with many of a. hoffman's books, this one also has that supernatural element ... i DO recommend this one - as well as the third angel - but there is that ghostly theme running through this novel so if you don't like to feel nervous about leaving your window blinds open at night for fear of some apparition scaring the sleep out of you - then it would be best to stay away from this book ... but oh, man! this woman can write! so if you aren't afraid of the dark - read her books ... she's frickin' amazing!} |

| taylor renae, calc II meltdown, & summer reads ... |
i've kind of begun to think of this blog as my less public blog so - yea-ay! there is an advantage to this - i can probably say things on here that i wouldn't normally say on my myspace blog b/c i know i don't have as many readers here as the other ... but anyway ... it's not like i have a whole lot of deep dark secrets to keep from the public eye - muahaha!
so --- j is an uncle - again :) ... sis-in-law maggie just gave birth to a sweet baby girl named taylor renae rauch - 7 lbs & change :) ... she's the first baby of the bryant/bechtoldt lineage w/in normal standards for birth weight in her generation ... gives me hope that maybe my own second born might weigh in at relatively normal too? hah! fat chance - knowing my family history, i'll probably end up with gestational diabetes again & have to get a c-sect - again ... actually, j & i talked about it & we may end up just scheduling a c-sect no matter what - it was just too stressful for us with the whole labor & pushing baby out thing ... yuck ... :( ... anyway, j, auds 'n i will be making the trip over to tennessee to see the rauch family in a couple of months - exciting! i've never been to nashville :) ... there's a pharmacy school in nashville so you never know - if loma linda pharmacy school says no, then maybe i'll take the PCAT & set my sights outside of california for the next go-around :) ... there's a pharmacy school in hawaii too, you know? wouldn't that be a fun experience! :)
NEhoo - now i'm just babbling - i'd better get going - auds 'n i have a date to meet j @ barnes 'n noble (escondido) after he gets off work so i can go to school tonight :) ... calculus II, here i come!
omg - speaking of calculus II - my teacher (i'll call him dr. b) - almost had a nervous breakdown last week - IN FRONT OF THE WHOLE CLASS ... someone had raised his hand & asked a question & dr. b ended up talking about something that had NOTHING at all to do with the question asked of him ... several students started snickering & giggling behind his back & dr. b freaked out & started ranting about how he had been an associate prof. @ rice university & that he had taught graduate level math & physics at the phD level ... he went on & on about how he did not deserve to have to go through the "mental anguish" of teaching "basic" math classes to students who are disrespectful & (he did not say the word, but it was implied) "retarded" ... we were still reeling from his referring to calc II as "basic" when he pulled out a box of transparencies with copies of recommendation letters written by previous students & co-professors from rice university & UC santa barbara, etc, and before we knew what had hit us, he was reading these recommendation letters word for word ... the letters spoke of how interesting & lively his lectures were (so far in this class he had read almost entirely from the book - so no, he hadn't been lively at all), and how he was always willing to work one-on-one with students on their questions (so not true! one of the smarter kids in class had asked him to slow down his teaching a little bit & he had rolled his eyes & did not even acknowledge the request - then later, someone raised their hand to ask a question & he steadfastly ignored them until another student verbally pointed it out & dr. b had no choice but to answer what he probably considered an inane "basic" math question) ... whoever that teacher had been who had taught at graduate level @ rice university back in the early 90s is no longer that same man - he hated teaching, one can obviously tell ... last tuesday, i arrived in class to find ppl on their way out & when i asked them what was going on, someone posted a sign on the door that said class was cancelled for the day ... "i guess he decided not to teach today - i heard someone pissed him off before class started & he just left & said he wasn't going to be aggravated," some guy said with a satisfied smirk on his face & i felt, i don't know, sorry for dr. b, i guess? he's not that great a teacher so far, but i was really hoping i could get calc II out of the way this summer ... if he decides to have a mental breakdown, then i don't know what the future of this class is going to be! well, hopefully, if they decide to send in a replacement, it'll be someone like the teacher i had for calc I ... prof. jones was cool - he actually got me to LIKE calculus!
well, now i'm REALLY babbling - i'd better get going or auds 'n i will be late!
talk to y'all later,
~ k

| a new haircut ... |
new haircut ... Current mood: sweaty
soooooo ...
the hubby has got a new haircut - it's of the peach fuzz variety - very short ... very very short ...
{sigh}
it's taking me a little bit of time to get used to it - unlike audrey, who, after coming home from church recognized her father immediately & reached for him eagerly
as for me - i was a little shocked to find a nearly-bald man greeting me as i came home today ...
of course - let us go back in time - to when i first met him his head was completely shaven then too - i was the newbie @ sav-on pharmacy - he was my pharmacy trainer - & he scared the crap out of me with his strict rules about how the pharmacy should run & his cocky, over-confident ways ... alpha males were never my favorite living creatures - & at the time, he was a total alpha male ... so whenever he would try to say hi to me, i would walk the other way or just ignore him altogether ...
so seeing him with the peach fuzz kind of made me do a little time-travel --- and i almost felt a twinge of that old fear ...
except this was no annoying alpha male earlier today - though his hair was short & his posture still cocky as shit - my husband saw my car coming up the driveway, and he opened the garage door for me - then greeted me at the driveway so he could carry my bags into the house ... "i wasn't going to let you in through the front door," he said, "there were bees there."
what a sweetie he is!
a bald one - but a sweetie nonetheless :) ... |

| annoyance ... |
got so annoyed in class today ---
seriously, people - don't waste my time and the teacher's time with your stupid questions ...
try a little harder - come to class prepared so i'm not spending half the class rolling my eyes over your stupidly phrased questions that only reveal that you haven't even done as little as open your textbook or class notes!!!
seriously, people - do your damn homework ...
it makes a world of difference!
AARGHHHH!!! |
